Dear Parents,
I hope that you and your family had a wonderful summer. It is a pleasure to begin a new school year and to work with your child in Grade Two. This year, the children will be exposed to a variety of activities in order to meet their needs and interests, to develop their knowledge of the French language, and to make sure that they experience success in learning French.
Oral communication: (Speaking and Listening)
The children will be encouraged to always listen attentively during lesson time in order to understand and to follow oral instructions. An active and daily participation in all the oral activities will help your child to gain confidence using familiar words and will also help to improve her/his oral skills. The students will have the opportunity to be involved in games, learning and singing French songs, being part of small plays in order to develop their ability to speak French, and to be able to use the French language in real life situations.
Reading:
The reading program in Grade Two will offer a variety of reading strategies (recognizing familiar sounds, looking at the pictures, decoding new and unfamiliar words). The students will be encouraged to use these strategies when reading assigned texts or new material in French.
After reviewing the sounds of the letters of the alphabet, the students will be introduced to new sounds in French such as “an”, “on”, “ch”, “ou”, “ai”, “oi”, etc…
Each sound will be taught in a context with familiar words and some visual supports.
On a daily basis, we will have reading activities, story time, free reading. I will provide French books in our “classroom library” and the students will be encouraged to take books out to read at home.
Writing:
Every day, the children will engage in a variety of written activities that will support the expectations found in the Grade Two curriculum. The children will be encouraged to refer to notebooks, numerous charts in the classroom, check lists, library books and ipads to help them and guide them to complete assigned tasks. All written activities will reinforce lessons taught in class and will challenge each child’s critical thinking. It is important that each student gets involved in all written activities in order to develop good working habits.
Social Studies:
In Social Studies, we will develop the students understanding of their local community and explore a variety of traditions within their families. Also, we will study communities around the world developing an awareness of the relationship between location, climate, physical features and how people live in various communities.
Every month, you will receive an “Information sheet” containing the themes, vocabulary, new sounds, lists of words related to specific sounds and some reading material such as list of words, sentences, poems, songs, library books. All texts will be kept in a “Duo-tang de lecture” and your child will be encouraged to take it home and to share and read on a regular basis in order to improve her/his reading skills.
I look forward to meeting you on Program Night where I will be able to provide you further information. I am pleased to be working with your child in Grade Two this year. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Marie Tanguay
