ar Parents,
I hope that you and your family had a wonderful summer. I would like to extend to you and your child a warm « Bienvenue » to Mme. Tanguay's French class.
Each day, the children will have a 75-minute period of French. In that time, we will develop a routine which includes mostly oral activities, the introduction of new sounds and vocabulary, learning how to read words and simple sentences, learning poems and songs, playing language-based games and also completing simple written activities. In Social Studies, which is also taught in French in our School Board, we will be studying a new unit every term (e.g. Ma communauté- My community).
Our daily activities will mainly promote oral communication. Each child will have the opportunity to communicate in French using thematic vocabulary and learning to ask and answer simple questions on familiar subjects. In reading, we will be using strategies such as making connections, visualizing, predicting to develop the ability of reading in French. Your child will also have the opportunity to borrow French books from the classroom library on a regular basis.
For September, we will review and learn the alphabet in French, numbers 0-20, days of the week, months, colours. We will also learn vocabulary related to the family as well as the familiar objects in the classroom. Each theme or subject is presented through songs, games, learning activities (oral and written), reading books.
On each newsletter, you will find a list of vocabulary and simple structures that will be learned throughout that month. You are welcomed to review and practice with your child at home.
Also on a monthly basis, a Scholastic order form will be sent home. If you wish to order, please return the form along with a cheque payable to Scholastic. Please note that a separate cheque must be made for your French book order and not included with your English book order.
I look forward to meeting you on Program Night where I will be providing more information and will answer all your questions. I am excited to be working with your child and hope to make this school year a successful and enriching one!
Merci,
Marie Tanguay
