Dear Parents,
It is a pleasure to begin a new school year and to work with your child in grade three. We will have a very busy and exciting year with new challenges and hopefully filled with a lot of fun, positive experiences while learning and developing skills in French. Through different learning tools like “Lire pour lire” (our School Board French reader), “Bien vivre ensemble” (Social Studies) and “Visage 1", I will be offering a variety of activities in all areas of the French language (oral communication, reading and writing) to best meet the needs and interests of the children.
Oral communication: (Speaking and listening)
The children will be encouraged to participate actively in all the oral activities. Every day, we will share some news, have messages to read and to discuss (in small or large groups) on different topics in order to develop the students’ vocabulary and to help them gain self confidence in speaking French. Also, the children will have the opportunity to be involved in small plays, games, songs and other skill developing activities.
Reading:
The children will bring home a reading duo-tang :« Lecture » containing stories from “Lire pour lire” the grade 3 French reader as well as other reading material such as vocabulary sheet related to a theme, songs, poems, articles and other relevant material. I would appreciate if you could read with your child on a regular basis in order to help her/him to develop good reading habits. Your support and encouragement is so important for your child to develop and to improve his/her reading skills.
Writing:
Every day, the children will engage in a variety of written activities that will support the expectations found in the curriculum of the third grade. The child will be able to refer to notebooks, numerous charts in the classroom, check lists, dictionaries, library books to help and guide them to complete all assigned tasks. All written activities will reinforce lessons taught in class, will be meeting the child's interests and will be challenging to develop critical thinking. It is important that each child always gets involved in all written activities in order to develop good working habits.
Social Studies:
In Social Studies, we will study and explore the life and contributions of the First Natives in Ontario and the impact they had back then and still in today's life. We will learn about the first pioneers in Ontario and explore their origin, their roots and their resources. We will also compare the lifestyle of pioneer’s in Ontario with today’s society. Furthermore, we will identify distinguishing features of urban and rural communities. We will explore the relationship between the natural environment, land use, and employment opportunities, and how different uses of land and resources affect the environment.
I hope that your child will take an active part in his or her French class. If there is anything that I can do to help or if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I will always be available to discuss your child’s progress in French.
Sincerely,
Marie Tanguay
